Reuters has a profile of Maher al-Asad, younger brother of Bashar, head of the Republican Guard, and a man portrayed as the most brutal of the Asads. The death of brother-in-law ‘Assaf Shawkat today narrows the Asad inner clique even more as the family circles the wagons.
